Trane Heat Pump Service: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide

We stock, service, and install Trane heat pump parts across San Antonio, with most repairs completed same-day or next-day depending on the part. Typical installed repair costs run $150 – $650, which covers the part, labor, and our 365-day guarantee on the work. The usual story we hear starts like this: the system was running fine through spring, then a hot afternoon hits and the house won’t cool, or the outdoor unit is humming but the fan won’t spin. By the time you call us, you’ve usually noticed the system running nonstop without reaching the temperature on the thermostat.

Which Trane Models This Applies To

The parts we stock and install cover the Trane heat pump lines most common in San Antonio: the XR series (XR13, XR14, XR15, XR16), the XL series (XL15i, XL16i, XL18i), and the newer RunTru and Ameristar value lines that share Trane engineering. Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people don’t know: Trane parts are not universally interchangeable even within the same series. A defrost control board for an XR14 built in 2016 won’t necessarily fit an XR14 built in 2021. Trane made running production changes to control boards, reversing valves, and even capacitor specs without changing the model number. We match parts by the outdoor unit’s serial number and the specific part number printed on the failed component, not by model name alone.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question for Trane specifically: Trane factory parts carry a premium, sometimes 30 – 50% more than a quality equivalent from a supplier like Mars, GE, or Supco. We’ll give you the choice in writing before any work starts. For compressors and reversing valves, we recommend OEM because the tolerances matter. For capacitors, contactors, and defrost sensors, a quality equivalent usually performs just as well and we’ll tell you what brand we’re installing. We also service Carrier and Lennox equipment, so if you’ve got a mixed system or a second unit, we can handle both.

Signs Your Trane Heat Pump Service Is Failing

  • Outdoor unit hums but the fan won’t turn. This is almost always a failed run capacitor. San Antonio heat accelerates capacitor failure because the high temperatures degrade the internal dielectric fluid faster. If you catch it early, the repair is a $150 – $250 fix. If it runs like this too long, you’ll smoke the compressor.
  • House won’t cool but the outside unit runs constantly. A stuck reversing valve or low refrigerant caused by a slow leak. If the reversing valve is stuck, the system thinks it’s in heating mode while you’re asking for cooling. We diagnose this by measuring the refrigerant line temperatures at the valve body.
  • System short-cycles on and off every few minutes. Often a failing defrost control board or a bad thermistor sending false temperature readings. On Trane units, a dirty outdoor coil combined with a marginal capacitor will do the same thing. The board replacement runs $250 – $450 installed.
  • Loud buzzing or chattering from the outdoor unit at startup. A pitted contactor is arcing instead of making a clean connection. Left alone, the contactor welds itself shut and the compressor runs continuously, which leads to a much bigger repair. This one’s a $180 – $300 fix, parts and labor included.
  • Ice building up on the outdoor coil in summer, or on the indoor coil in winter. Your defrost cycle isn’t working. That points to a failed defrost control board, a bad defrost sensor, or low refrigerant. In San Antonio’s humidity, a failed defrost cycle in heating mode will freeze the outdoor unit solid within a day.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Most Trane heat pump repairs in San Antonio land between $150 and $650 installed. Here’s how that breaks down:

  • Run capacitor: $150 – $250 installed
  • Contactor: $180 – $300 installed
  • Defrost control board: $250 – $450 installed
  • Thermistor or defrost sensor: $150 – $250 installed
  • Reversing valve: $450 – $650 installed
  • Compressor: Typically $1,800 – $3,200 installed, depending on the model and whether it’s still under Trane’s compressor warranty

Every price we quote in San Antonio is a written price before the work starts. No surprises after the fact. The range depends on the specific Trane model, the part’s OEM versus equivalent status, and whether the failure damaged anything downstream. Every repair includes our written guarantee for 365 days. If the same part fails within that year, we return at no charge under the 365-Day Done Right Promise. No argument, no diagnostic fee, no fine print.

DIY or Call Us?

Heat pumps run on 240 volts, and the capacitor inside your Trane unit holds a stored charge even after the breaker is off. A charged capacitor can stop your heart. That’s not a scare tactic; it’s the first thing I tell anyone who opens the service panel. What you can safely do: check for a tripped breaker, check that the thermostat is set correctly, clear leaves and debris from around the outdoor unit, and change a dirty air filter. Anything involving the capacitor, contactor, reversing valve, or defrost board should be handled by a licensed tech who knows how to discharge the stored voltage and test the part under load. Devin Marlowe and the rest of our team run these calls across San Antonio weekly, and we’d rather see you safe than sorry. Call (361) 470-8872 and tell us the symptom, not the guess.

Tell me what’s wrong, I’ll tell you what it costs, and we’ll get your house back to livable.
